"You" Can Design A Perfect Landscape

Do you think you lack the skills needed to re-imagine or design your landscape? Well, hold on… because you’re in luck! With a few simple tips we will walk you through the steps to lay out a landscape you’ll love!

Step 1: Determine what your budget is and how much time you want to spend with the upkeep of your landscape. Keep those numbers in mind as you plan.

Step 2: Draw your landscape using a birds-eye view. Include key features that will remain a part of your landscape like existing trees or planting beds. Tip: Make copies of your drawing as your plan will evolve and change as you get focused on a final plan.

Step 3: Write out your desired landscaping goals. Do you want a patio for hosting a party? A garden for planting? A big lawn for the dogs? A small sitting area? Add your goals to the plan. It is helpful to work from big to small. If you know you want a paver patio, add/draw that first then work towards smaller items.

Step 4: Define your style. Look to the exterior of your home to guide you in your design choices. A traditional home works well with a variety of landscapes, but a modern home looks best with simple plantings and clean lines. Keep this style in mind as you buy materials and decor.

Step 5: Add points of interest. Here are a few ideas…

  • Garden bed – Remember that perennials grow back every year, whereas annuals will need to be re-planted each year. As you choose plants, mix the texture, size, and height to make your garden more interesting.
  • Patio – A patio is a great way to extend your outdoor living space. Use it as an area to set up a dining table, extra seating, or a fire pit.
  • Pathway - Decide how to get to points of interest – Pavers? Small Stones? Flagstone? Paths help unify spaces and create points of interest.
  • Water Feature – Small ponds or fountains can be an eye-catching design element. You won’t be the only one enjoying the water… birds and butterflies will love it, too.

Step 6: Add the final touches. If a patio, add décor to make it feel like your space. Lighting is another important element for your patio. For planting beds, add yard art or small sculptures.
