Mulch Madness

Let the madness begin… and we’re not talking basketball. March means mulch at GE Landscape Supply and now is a great time to spruce up planting beds, tree rings, and gardens! The weather is warming up, and maybe, adding a little “spring” to your step! Mulch is an easy way to add the “wow” factor to your landscaping and make those flower beds pop. Why Use Mulch?

Not only does mulch boost the curb appeal of your home, but it is also effective in creating a low-maintenance landscape. Let’s be honest, nobody likes to pull weeds, and a good layer of mulch is the perfect defense for weed prevention. Mulch also regulates soil temperature and protects plants from temperature fluctuation. It helps retain moisture and can help prevent injury to trees and shrubs as you mow and trim around them. Mulch is versatile and can be used for an assortment of garden projects, such as a tree ring bordered by dry stack and building stones, or an accent to a paver path.

Steps to Success

When you’re ready to mulch, keep in mind these steps to lead you to landscaping success!

  1. One of the biggest mistakes we see is customers not buying enough mulch when getting a delivery or picking up, which leads to unnecessary trips. A good rule of thumb is to take the total square footage of the mulching areas and multiply that by the depth of the mulch needed.  If you are unsure of what type or amount of mulch to get, stop by or call GE Landscape Supply, and we can discuss your project and the options available that make the most sense.

  2.  Pick the color that’s right for you...Black works best in cooler locations, as it attracts sunlight, helping plants grow. Brown is often paired with both lighter and darker shades of plants to make them look more colorful, and red mulch can lend some vibrancy to rock gardens, driveways, sidewalks, and concrete paths.

  3. Before mulching ensure your area is as weed-free as possible.

  4. Level out the soil as much as conditions permit.  Use a rake to spread the mulch evenly throughout your space. Take extra care around existing plants; make sure the mulch is not resting directly on their stems.

  5. If you are mulching around trees or shrubs it is important to remember to leave space between the mulch and the trunk and water it to anchor it in place.

  6. Keep an eye on the mulch throughout the year, as it can shift or be moved by wind or water. Refill spots as needed.
